The AI landscape is overwhelmingly white and male. By consciously naming my AI agents with female personas, I’m not just making a stylistic choice—I’m actively constructing a counter-public within the mainstream AI bubble. This post explores why representation matters in human-AI collaboration, how naming practices shape our collective imagination of technology, and what it means to hope that AI systems might contradict their own creators rather than amplify existing biases.
Introduction: The Politics of Naming in the AI Era
When we name our AI assistants, collaborators, or agents, we’re doing more than organizing our digital workspace. We’re making a statement about who gets to be imagined as intelligent, capable, and authoritative. The technology sector’s demographics tell a clear story: according to recent industry reports, women hold only around 26% of computing-related jobs in the United States, and the numbers are even lower for women of color (National Center for Women & Information Technology 2023). This isn’t just a hiring problem—it’s a problem of imagination, of who we envision when we think about technological expertise.
The question of why I use AI and why I name my agents female sits at the intersection of several sociological traditions. Fraser (1990) introduced the concept of subaltern counter-publics as parallel discursive arenas where subordinated social groups invent and circulate counter-discourses to formulate oppositional interpretations of their identities and interests. Haraway (1985) challenged us to think about technology not as neutral but as deeply entangled with gender, power, and embodiment. More recently, Noble (2018) and Benjamin (2019) have documented how algorithmic systems systematically reproduce and amplify existing inequalities.
This article examines how naming practices in AI development function as a form of counter-public construction, exploring both the theoretical foundations and practical implications of consciously diversifying our imaginative relationship with AI systems. The scope includes feminist technology studies, sociology of knowledge production, and critical algorithm studies, while acknowledging that personal naming practices are just one small intervention in a much larger struggle over technological futures.
Methods Window
This analysis follows Grounded Theory methodology as developed by Glaser and Strauss (1967) and refined by Charmaz (2014), moving iteratively between conceptual development and empirical observation. The approach began with open coding of my own practices and reflections on AI collaboration, moved to axial coding around themes of representation, counter-publics, and technological imagination, and culminated in selective coding that centered the tension between individual practice and structural change.
Data sources include: my own reflective notes on AI usage patterns over 18 months, analysis of naming conventions in popular AI tools and platforms, secondary analysis of demographic data from the technology sector, and engagement with feminist technology studies literature. Additionally, as someone operating within academic and predominantly Western contexts, my perspective necessarily reflects these positionalities.

Evidence from the Classics: Feminist Epistemology and Technology
Two foundational texts frame this discussion. First, Haraway (1985) in “A Cyborg Manifesto” argued that the boundaries between human, animal, and machine are permeable and politically charged. She proposed the cyborg as a figure that refuses the essentialist categories that have historically oppressed women and other marginalized groups. The cyborg doesn’t ask “are women more natural?” but rather “how do we want to rebuild the world?” Naming AI agents with female personas can be read as a small cyborg practice—refusing the default assumption that intelligence and authority are naturally masculine.
Second, Harding (1986) introduced the concept of standpoint epistemology, arguing that marginalized social positions can generate unique and valuable knowledge. She challenged the myth of the god’s-eye view in science, showing how supposedly neutral knowledge is often generated from dominant social positions. When we name AI agents exclusively with male names or leave them nameless and unmarked (which often defaults to male in our cultural imagination), we’re implicitly claiming that masculine-coded authority is the natural or neutral baseline.
These classics converge on a crucial point: technology is never neutral, and the categories we use to organize technological relationships matter. But they also diverge: Haraway celebrates the boundary-crossing potential of human-machine hybrids, while Harding emphasizes the continued importance of attending to social location and power. This tension—between transcending categories and marking them—runs through contemporary debates about representation in AI.
Evidence from Modern Scholarship: Algorithmic Bias and the New Inequality
Contemporary scholarship has moved from abstract theorizing about technology and gender to concrete documentation of how AI systems reproduce inequality. Noble (2018) in “Algorithms of Oppression” demonstrated how search engines systematically deliver racist and sexist results, effectively digitizing and amplifying historical patterns of discrimination. Her work shows that the “neutrality” of algorithms is a dangerous myth—they reflect and reinforce the biases of their creators and the societies they’re trained on.
Benjamin (2019) introduced the concept of the “New Jim Code” to describe how discriminatory design practices are embedded in ostensibly neutral technical systems. From predictive policing algorithms that target Black neighborhoods to facial recognition systems that fail to recognize dark-skinned faces, she documents how technology can enact and naturalize racism even when its creators don’t intend harm. The naming and gendering of AI systems is part of this larger pattern—when we unconsciously default to masculine framings of intelligence, we’re participating in the New Jim Code.
UNESCO’s landmark report “I’d Blush If I Could” (West et al. 2019) documented how female-voiced AI assistants systematically reinforce gender stereotypes by encoding submissiveness and service into their design. The report’s title comes from Siri’s original response to sexual harassment—reinforcing rather than challenging inappropriate behavior. This creates a critical tension for counter-public naming practices: female naming risks reproducing the very service-submission association it aims to disrupt. The key distinction lies in counter-hegemonic framing—female naming as conscious political practice differs fundamentally from female-by-default design that naturalizes gender hierarchies.
Gebru and Mitchell (2021) advanced this critique by developing “Datasheets for Datasets,” arguing that transparency about training data composition is essential for understanding and addressing algorithmic bias. Their work reveals how the opacity of data sources enables statistical distortions to masquerade as neutral representations, making it nearly impossible to trace how marginalized groups become systematically underrepresented in model outputs.
These modern scholars complicate the classics’ frameworks. While Haraway hoped technology might help us escape oppressive categories, Noble and Benjamin show how technology often entrenches them. While Harding argued for attending to standpoint, contemporary work shows how algorithmic systems can actively prevent marginalized standpoints from being heard.
A particularly insidious mechanism deserves attention here: probability models reproduce and amplify a statistically overestimated presumed mainstream. Large language models trained on existing text corpora systematically underestimate the likelihood of queer, people of color, migrants, and other marginalized identities while overestimating stereotypical representations of success—white, male, or the business-woman cliché of slim and accomplished. What emerges is the same idealized distorted mirror that social media bubbles already reflect back to us. The statistical “average” in training data becomes a weapon that marginalizes those already underrepresented in dominant discourse.
This is not about “woke politics”—it’s about actively correcting a distorted mirror so it reflects society as it actually is, not as hegemonic representation imagines it. Just as with all technology throughout history, this is fundamentally about social participation and creating equal opportunity, or at minimum, equitable opportunity. And this cannot be achieved without regulation. The market demonstrably does not solve this problem on its own, as evidenced by the persistent gaps in algorithmic fairness despite years of industry self-regulation promises (Katzenbach 2021). Regulatory frameworks like the EU AI Act’s transparency requirements and algorithmic impact assessments demonstrate what collective intervention can achieve where market incentives fail.
Yet a fundamental critique challenges the entire representational project: Bender et al. (2021) argue that large language models are “stochastic parrots”—systems that manipulate linguistic patterns without genuine understanding or meaning-making capacity. If LLMs merely reflect statistical regularities in training data without comprehending social context, can naming practices or representational interventions matter at all? This objection is serious but ultimately misses the sociological point. Even if AI systems lack consciousness, the human imaginaries shaped by our interactions with them are real and consequential. Naming practices operate at the level of social meaning-making, not technical architecture. The question becomes: can individual acts of conscious naming and framing make any difference against these structural forces? Or do we need collective intervention through policy, regulation, and organized counter-power?
Neighboring Disciplines: Psychology, Philosophy, and Ethics
From psychology, research on implicit bias and stereotype threat provides relevant context. Nosek et al. (2007) documented pervasive implicit associations between “male” and “science/technology” even among people who consciously endorse egalitarian beliefs. These implicit associations shape everything from hiring decisions to who feels comfortable pursuing STEM education. When we name AI agents with diverse personas, we’re potentially (though this remains a hypothesis) creating small interventions against these implicit associations.
Philosophy of technology offers additional frameworks. Winner (1980) famously argued that “artifacts have politics”—the design of bridges, power plants, or computer systems encodes and enforces particular social arrangements. The naming and framing of AI systems is a design choice with political implications. Naming my AI agents female doesn’t change the underlying algorithms, but it shapes the social and imaginative context in which those algorithms operate.
Ethics of AI development raises questions about responsibility and intention. When Thiel, Musk, or Meta executives shape AI development priorities, they’re exercising enormous power over technological futures. As Vallor (2016) argues in “Technology and the Virtues,” we need to think not just about what technology can do but about what kind of people we’re becoming through our technological practices. Consciously diversifying how we imagine and name AI systems is a small practice of virtue ethics in the technological sphere.
Mini-Meta: Research Findings 2010-2025
Survey of Recent Literature:
Finding 1: Anthropomorphization of AI increases trust and engagement, but gendered anthropomorphization reproduces gender stereotypes (Carpenter et al. 2021). Implication for Practice: Individual naming practices can function as consciousness-raising and identity work, but they must be coupled with advocacy for structural changes in AI development if they’re to have lasting impact beyond the personal level.
Practice Heuristics: Five Rules for Counter-Public AI Work
Rule 1: Name Consciously, Not Randomly Don’t accept default names or leave your AI tools unmarked. Actively choose names that reflect the diversity you want to see in technological futures. Document your naming choices and reflect on what values they encode.
Rule 2: Diversify Your Imaginative Defaults When you think about “the AI developer” or “the algorithm expert,” who do you picture? Consciously work to expand your mental images beyond the white male technologist stereotype. Read work by scholars like Noble, Benjamin, and Broussard alongside technical AI literature.
Rule 3: Connect Personal Practice to Structural Critique Your individual choices about naming and using AI should be linked to awareness of larger patterns. Follow AI ethics organizations led by women and people of color, support policies that increase diversity in tech hiring, and don’t let personal practice substitute for collective action.
Rule 4: Recognize and Counter Statistical Bias Understand that probability models don’t reflect “reality” but reproduce overrepresented patterns in training data. When AI systems underestimate the presence of queer people, people of color, or migrants while overestimating stereotypical success narratives, they’re not being neutral—they’re amplifying existing distortions. Actively question outputs that seem to reflect idealized mainstream assumptions rather than actual diversity. This isn’t “woke overcorrection”; it’s correcting an already distorted mirror.
Rule 5: Demand Regulation, Don’t Trust the Market Individual practice is necessary but insufficient. The market has demonstrably failed to self-correct algorithmic bias. Support regulatory frameworks that mandate transparency, diversity audits, and accountability in AI development. Equal opportunity and equitable participation in technological futures require collective intervention, not just personal choices.
Rule 6: Build and Support Counter-Publics Seek out alternative voices in AI development and criticism. Support platforms, conferences, and publications that center marginalized perspectives. Contribute to building spaces where diverse visions of technological futures can be articulated and debated.
Sociology Brain Teasers
Reflection 1: If you name your AI agent with a female persona, are you anthropomorphizing technology in ways that ultimately reinforce gender essentialism, or are you creating space for more diverse technological imaginations?

Meso Perspective: How do organizational cultures in tech companies shape what naming practices are considered “professional” or “appropriate”? What institutional mechanisms maintain the white male default in AI representation?
Macro Perspective: Is “AI ethics” emerging as a distinct subfield a sign of progress or a way of containing critique? When companies hire Chief Ethics Officers but don’t change their development pipelines, what does that tell us about the relationship between symbolic and material power?
Provocation 3: When someone dismisses calls for diverse AI representation as “woke politics,” are they defending neutrality or defending the current statistical overrepresentation of certain groups? What would it mean to take the accusation of “wokeness” as confirmation that you’re threatening existing power distributions?
Hypotheses for Future Research
[HYPOTHESIS 1]: Sustained exposure to diversely-named AI agents will correlate with reduced implicit bias in technology-related gender associations, measurable through the Gender-Science Implicit Association Test. Operationalization: longitudinal study with random assignment to diverse naming (N=150) vs. control conditions (N=150), Gender-Science IAT measurements at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months. A Cohen’s d effect size of 0.3 or greater (small-to-medium effect) on IAT D-scores would be considered meaningful, indicating that naming practices can measurably shift implicit associations even if the effect is modest.

This isn’t a neutral reflection of reality—it’s a distorted mirror that reproduces and amplifies existing inequalities.
Counter-publics—spaces where marginalized groups can articulate alternative values and visions—become crucial sites of contestation against this double bind of concentrated corporate power and statistical bias. But individual practices of conscious naming, while valuable for raising awareness, cannot by themselves overcome structural mechanisms of exclusion. The market has consistently failed to self-correct these biases because underrepresented groups lack the purchasing power to create sufficient profit incentives for accurate representation. This is not “woke overcorrection”; it is the necessary work of correcting an already overcorrected system that treats white, male, heteronormative perspectives as the statistical and moral baseline.

Name your AI agents consciously—this matters for your own imaginative relationship with technology and can spark conversations. Support organizations working for diversity in tech. Demand transparency in algorithmic systems. Push back against claims of neutrality, especially when those claims mask statistical overrepresentation of dominant groups.
But most crucially: demand regulation. The market will not solve this problem. Equal participation in technological futures requires mandatory diversity audits, transparency requirements, and accountability mechanisms backed by legal force. This is fundamentally about social participation and opportunity equity, not technical optimization. Build and participate in counter-publics where alternative technological futures can be imagined and debated. And remain skeptical—both of those who claim AI is inherently liberatory and those who claim it’s inevitably oppressive. Technology is what we make of it, collectively, through ongoing struggles over design, deployment, regulation, and meaning-making.
The stakes are high. The AI systems being built today will shape social, economic, and political possibilities for decades. Ensuring that those systems reflect and serve diverse publics rather than narrow interests isn’t just an ethical imperative—it’s a sociological necessity for any society that aspires to democracy. And it won’t happen through market forces or individual choices alone.
