The central idea of friction is that every sociotechnical system generates contradictions: accuracy vs. fairness, innovation vs. trust, personalization vs. equality. Studying these tensions doesn’t just reveal malfunctions — it reveals how societies negotiate meaning and moral order.

The cultural script of being “fit,” “glowing,” and “ageless” merges aesthetics with morality. Health becomes a visible performance — a sign of discipline and virtue — rather than a state of well-being. Sociologists call this the moralization of health: when self-care turns into a duty to conform.
